Caring for the Dementia Patient
Caring for the dementia patient is challenging. Not only do you have to see that their basic daily needs are met, but you also have to deal with their forgetfulness, mood swings, and increasing lack of ability to do things for themselves all while dealing with your own emotions. Caring for the dementia patient requires patience, skill, understanding, and stamina. And you have to remember everything for two people (more if you also have young children!) There is a lot to learn and a lot you need to know. This section will help you to learn the caregiving skills you will need as well as help you to figure out what you need to do, what you should be doing, and what you need to plan to do in the future. We hope to make
caregiving at home
easier and more rewarding for you. How we wish we’d had a guide like this when our Mom first started to show dementia symptoms. We spent time researching when we could have been singing songs with Mom or taking a walk or making a scrapbook.
Dementia steals more than just a person’s memory. It also steals the opportunities the dementia patient’s family will have to make more memories. There are so many more valuable ways to spend your time than researching how to activate a power of attorney or which foods are best to improve the memory or how to approach the difficult task of taking away your parent’s diver’s license. We hope our experience in caring for a dementia patient will help you to provide the care your loved one deserves.
